Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening specialist healthcare delivery in Ghana following high-level discussions with the leadership of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.
In a post shared on Saturday, January 31, the Vice President said she met with the College’s leadership, led by Prof Afua Hesse, to review ongoing initiatives and upcoming programmes aimed at improving access to specialist medical care across the country.
A key focus of the meeting was preparations for a large-scale volunteer medical outreach, expected to attract between 1,500 and 2,000 medical professionals, who will provide free medical services to patients.
The initiative is anticipated to significantly expand access to specialist care, particularly for underserved communities.
Discussions also centred on the planned relaunch of the College’s Endowment Fund, which will be activated across participating countries during an upcoming gala.
According to the Vice President, the fund is designed to support the training of specialist doctors in Ghana and the wider sub-region, reinforcing long-term capacity building in healthcare delivery.
In addition, the meeting explored efforts to establish a medical simulation centre, intended to enhance specialist training and ensure Ghana remains competitive within the global medical training landscape.
Prof Opoku-Agyemang commended the College for its sustained commitment to issues that directly impact the health and well-being of Ghanaians, praising the quality of specialist training while stressing the need for continuous improvement to address existing gaps in healthcare delivery.
She emphasised the importance of expanding access to healthcare through multiple service delivery channels and called for stronger collaboration among health institutions to improve outcomes nationwide.
The Vice President further reaffirmed the government’s recognition of the critical role specialist training plays in building a resilient and responsive healthcare system, urging sustained partnership with professional bodies to ensure Ghana keeps pace with global standards while improving care for its people.
