The Dean of the School of Journalism and Media Studies (SOJAMS) at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), Professor Etse Sikanku, has reaffirmed the school’s commitment to training ethical and responsible journalists.
Delivering remarks at an event to commemorate World Radio Day on Friday, he said the school aims to strengthen professionalism in journalism.
“At the School of Journalism and Media Studies at UniMAC, we are committed to training the next generation of professional, conscientious, globally minded, ethically grounded, and socially responsible journalists,” he stated at the programme held in the university’s auditorium on the South Legon campus.
Addressing the role of radio in the digital age, Professor Sikanku challenged broadcasters to embrace radio as a tool for unity and a pillar of Ghana’s democracy.
“The future of radio in Ghana depends on professionals who understand not just its legacy, but also its potential as an instrument for social cohesion, democratic consolidation, and national development,” he said.
On behalf of UniMAC and SOJAMS, he congratulated radio practitioners across the country for their dedication and resilience, adding that their voices remain critical in shaping the nation through information dissemination and public education.
World Radio Day is marked annually on February 13 to celebrate radio as a powerful communication tool that informs, transforms, and unites societies.
This year’s celebration at UniMAC was held on the theme: “Radio and AI: The Future of Media Practice in Ghana.”
The event featured a panel discussion with seasoned radio host Kafui Dey, JoyNews Channel Manager Kwaku Owusu Peprah, and SOJAMS lecturer Samuel Danso.
All the panellists agreed that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has enhanced radio content and production, but cautioned against its irresponsible use.
They urged broadcasters to develop prompting literacy as an effective way to deploy AI in their work.
The programme was attended by the Secretary-General of the Ghana Commission for UNESCO, Professor Osman Damba; the Pro Vice-Chancellor of UniMAC, Professor Winston Abroampa; Acting Registrar Obaapanyin Dr Adu Oforiwaa; Director of Public Affairs Nana Efua Rockson; and other university officials.
Also present were heads of departments at the School of Journalism, faculty members, students, and media practitioners.
The auditorium was filled, as participants took their seats well before the highly anticipated event began.
