Tension is rising at Akyem Akroso in the Asene-Manso-Akroso District of the Eastern Region following a dispute between the Towa No. 1 Royal Family and the town’s Chief, Nana Kwabena Ofori II, over plans to use a royal cemetery for a supermarket project.
The royal family has strongly opposed the proposal, insisting that the land serves as an ancestral burial ground and must be preserved.
They warned that disturbing the resting place of their forebears could have spiritual consequences for the community.
Speaking to Adom News, the head of the Towa No. 1 Royal Family, Opanin John Asare, said the cemetery is sacred and should not be touched in the name of development.
“Any attempt to repurpose the land is a disrespect to our traditions and history,” he said, adding that ignoring the family’s concerns could escalate tensions and threaten peace in the area.
In response, the Chief of Akyem Akroso, Nana Kwabena Ofori II, defended the decision, noting that the cemetery has been unused for over 25 years.
He said the project would modernise the town and create employment opportunities for young people.
The chief clarified that the land has not been sold outright but leased for development, and he appealed to residents to remain calm while discussions continue.
The disagreement has divided opinion in the community, with some advocating for the protection of ancestral heritage, while others support development initiatives.
For now, the standoff continues, with both parties holding firmly to their positions.
