Former Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, Dr Kingsley Agyemang, has disclosed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration inherited an $86 million debt when it assumed office in 2017.
Speaking on The Probe on Sunday on JoyNews, he indicated that the arrears accumulated under the first NDC government posed an immediate threat to Ghanaian students’ continued study abroad.
He noted that many beneficiaries were facing the risk of withdrawal from their programmes due to unpaid fees and stipends.
According to Dr Agyemang, the NPP government took swift action to clear the outstanding amount in order to safeguard the academic progression and welfare of Ghanaian scholars overseas.
“I inherited $86 million, and my government came to the aid of the students, and no students were sent home,” he noted.

His remarks came as part of a broader discussion on the country’s current scholarship-related debts, which continue to burden the conditions of Ghanaians studying abroad.
In July this year, the Youth Development and Empowerment Minister, George Opare Addo, disclosed that the government inherited a staggering GH¢700 million in unpaid scholarship debt.
The Abuakwa South Legislator appealed to President Mahama to take action on the development.
