The Bono Regional Police Command has confirmed the death of one person following renewed chieftaincy clashes in Sampa, in the Jaman North District of the Bono Region, on Wednesday, September 10, 2025.
In a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, police reported that several others sustained injuries, while properties, including parts of the Sampa main market, were destroyed.
The deceased has been identified as a woman. According to the statement, three police officers also sustained gunshot wounds during the disturbances but have since been treated and discharged.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the violence stemmed from a long-standing chieftaincy dispute between two factions.
While police say calm has been restored, reinforcement teams have been deployed to Sampa and surrounding communities to strengthen security.
“The Police continue to work with stakeholders to ensure lasting peace in the town,” the statement noted.
Curfew Imposed and Weapons Ban Announced
Meanwhile, the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, acting on the advice of the Bono Regional Security Council and by Executive Instrument, has renewed the curfew hours for Sampa township.
The curfew will run from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. daily, effective Thursday, September 11, 2025.
A separate statement signed by the Minister urged chiefs, opinion leaders, the youth, and residents to exercise restraint and use non-violent means to resolve their grievances.
The government also announced a total ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, or offensive weapons within Sampa township.
“Any person found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted,” the statement warned.
Trigger for Renewed Violence
District Chief Executive George Adane suggested that the latest disturbances may have been sparked by reports circulating in the community, alleging that the National House of Chiefs was preparing to gazette one of the claimants in the chieftaincy dispute.
Authorities have assured residents of their commitment to restoring lasting peace and stability in the area.
