Oluwatosin ‘Tosyn’ Bucknor was more than just a radio host and singer-songwriter; she was a radiant force in Nigerian media, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of every entertainment lover.

Born on August 15, 1981, in a taxi—a moment that earned her the name “Abiona,” meaning “Born on the Road”—Tosyn was destined for greatness from the very start. Her father, Segun Bucknor, a highlife musician in his day, instilled in her a love for the arts that would see her evolve into the multifaceted media personality we all cherished.
From hosting the infectious “Top Of The Morning With Tosyn Bucknor” on Top Radio, where she was lovingly dubbed “Area Mama” and hailed as “The Voice of Lagos,” to her influential role at Inspiration FM, Tosyn’s career was a masterclass in passion, resilience, and creativity.
Despite being born with sickle cell anaemia—a battle she fought with unwavering determination—Tosyn turned her challenges into fuel for her activism. She founded the “These Genes Project” to support others grappling with the same condition, and she built S.H.A.R.E Networks, which later evolved into The Tosyn Bucknor Company, to uplift and empower young creatives.
Tosyn’s creative genius wasn’t confined to the radio booth; she was also a songwriter, a vlogger, a poet, an actress, and a public speaker. Her work spanned the music space, collaborating with top producers and artists like Skales and Rooftop MCs, and her album, ‘Pop Rock Soul and Jara’, is a testament to her diverse talents.
Even in her final years, Tosyn used every platform available to draw attention to issues affecting everyday Nigerians—proving that her life, though tragically short at 37, was packed with more fulfilment than many live in a lifetime.
For those of us who grew up tuning in to her morning show or vibing to her soulful tunes, Tosyn Bucknor’s legacy is a call to action. We honour her memory by championing the causes she held dear: supporting sickle cell patients, nurturing emerging talents, and insisting that media and entertainment in Nigeria be as vibrant and resilient as she was.
The objective of These Genes Foundation is to create awareness of the foundation’s efforts to support individuals with sickle cell, ensuring they have access to the necessary resources and support. It is currently managed by a board of trustees led by Tosyn’s sister, Funke Bucknor Obruthe.
Earlier today, Funke Bucknor wrote on Instagram: “Today, we celebrate the beautiful life of Tosyn, a soul whose strength, light, and courage still inspire us every day. As I remember my sister, I also remember everyone living with sickle cell. In her honor and in the spirit of the things she loved, we’re asking you to stand with us in the fight against sickle cell.”
Your donation to These Genes Foundation will help provide support, raise awareness, and bring hope to those living with the condition, and it is the best way to support Tosyn Bucknor’s legacy.
