The Private Universities Students’ Association of Ghana (PUSAG) has issued a powerful statement of mourning and condemnation following a tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra, which resulted in the loss of six young lives during a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise.
Several other applicants were left injured in the chaotic incident.
PUSAG, the umbrella body for over 137 private universities nationwide, described the heartbreaking event as a “painful reminder” of systemic failures in managing mass public engagements and immediately called for sweeping institutional reforms to safeguard Ghanaian youth.
While acknowledging the GAF’s effort to conduct the massive exercise, PUSAG was explicit in its criticism of the security lapse.
The association argues that, given the volume of application forms sold and the anticipated massive turnout of applicants, the tragedy was preventable.
“It is regrettable that adequate preventive measures were not fully anticipated and implemented,” the statement read.
PUSAG asserted that an advance operational assessment and crowd management plan should have been deployed at least 24 hours prior to the event to secure the premises and protect the applicants.
Beyond the institutional oversight, PUSAG highlighted that the stampede tragically underscored the “desperation and determination” of Ghana’s unemployed youth, many of whom are willing to face “dire circumstances” for a chance to serve their nation.
The association insisted that this zeal and patriotism must be met with dignity, safety, and respect from state agencies.
“The lives lost today are not just statistics—they are symbols of a generation’s hope, courage, and undying belief in the promise of Ghana,” stated Ibrahim Issah, PUSAG’s National President.
To honour the fallen and prevent future disasters, PUSAG issued three concrete demands directed at key government ministries:
- Heroic Funeral Rites: PUSAG called on the Minister for the Interior to direct that the six deceased applicants be accorded heroic funeral rites in solemn recognition of their desire for national service.
- Immediate Preventive Measures: The Ghana Armed Forces and all other security agencies were urged to immediately draw lessons from the tragedy and adopt preventive crowd control measures for all future recruitment processes.
- Comprehensive Youth Safety Framework: An appeal was made to the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment to establish a comprehensive Youth Safety Framework that guarantees the protection and welfare of young people in all state-led initiatives and public engagements.
The student body has reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for fair employment opportunities and improved coordination between state agencies and the youth they serve.
They concluded by urging the nation to allow the tragedy to “awaken our conscience, reform our systems, and inspire a renewed national commitment to safeguard the dreams of every Ghanaian youth.”
