
The Eastern Regional Police Command has arraigned 34 suspects, including six chiefs, in connection with the recent shooting incident at Ahwerase in the Akuapem South Municipality that left one person dead and three others injured.
The violence reportedly broke out during a traditional ritual to lift the ban on noise-making, marking the start of the annual Odwira Festival.
The deceased, identified as Isaac Nana Kwasi, was pronounced dead, while the injured are receiving treatment at the Aburi KOM Presbyterian Hospital.
According to the police, the suspects have been charged with “rioting with offensive weapons and causing unlawful harm.”
The police said it has retrieved two firearms, a Umarex pistol (No. MP160407589) and a Cyborg Magnum Force Pump Action (No. 602-H25YT-516) from the scene, along with four live and four spent cartridges.
It further said calm has since been restored to the area as investigations continue.
The Eastern Regional Police Command assured the public that adequate security measures have been put in place before, during, and after the Odwira Festival to maintain peace and protect lives and property.
