The Oti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has imposed an indefinite ban on all festival celebrations in Nkwanta township and its surroundings in the Oti Region.
The decision, under the signature of John Kwadwo Gyapong, Chairman of REGSEC, doubling as Regional Minister, was announced on August 20, 2025, following a meeting with the traditional leadership of the three ethnic groups in the area.
REGSEC cited the ongoing ethnic conflict in Nkwanta as the reason for the ban, stating that the measure is necessary to maintain peace and prevent further escalation of tensions.
They said the ban covers all forms of traditional rites and festivities.
REGSEC warned that anyone who flouts the directive will be arrested and prosecuted. However, they emphasised the importance of adhering to the ban to ensure peace and stability in the conflict-prone township.
The ban is aimed at preventing further aggravation of the existing tensions and promoting peace in the area.
REGSEC’s decision is expected to help maintain law and order in Nkwanta township and its surrounding areas.
