The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has provided a blow-by-blow account of Wednesday’s incident involving private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu, insisting that his arrest was lawful and free from any political or personal motive.
According to a statement posted by the OSP’s Director-SRC, Sammy Darko, on social media on Thursday, December 4, Mr Kpebu caused an obstruction after ignoring security instructions upon arrival at the premises.
“He reacted angrily to the reminder and insulted the guards… He insisted he could act as he pleased and threatened to report them,” Mr Darko wrote.
The OSP claims the lawyer told security officers they were “nobodies” and that even their boss “would soon be removed.”
Officers subsequently arrested him on suspicion of obstruction.
“The arrest was executed without force,” the statement emphasised.
Mr Kpebu was later granted bail, though the OSP notes that one of his lawyers created further disruption.
“She insulted officers and caused a scene… Despite her behaviour, officers removed her gently and without force,” Mr Darko noted.
Addressing speculation that Mr Kpebu had “set a trap” for the OSP, the office rejected the claim outright.
“The Office has not fallen for any trap. It acted strictly within legal and procedural bounds,” the statement said.
Mr Kpebu is expected to report at 11 a.m. today for further investigations relating to the alleged obstruction. A different date will be scheduled for the inquiry into his corruption allegations.
