The Ghana Garden and Flower Movement and its initiator, Strategic Communications Africa Ltd. (Stratcomm Africa), have expressed delight at the naming of an orchid after President John Dramani Mahama by the Singapore government.
The orchid, “Vanda John Dramani Mahama”, was unveiled during the President’s recent visit to Singapore and now forms part of the prestigious “VIP Orchids” collection at the Singapore Botanical Gardens.
The gesture reflects Singapore’s long-standing tradition of honouring visiting heads of state with orchid hybrids.
In a statement, the Movement congratulated President Mahama, saying it trusts he will be inspired “to continue to serve our dear country with the resilience of the orchid and successfully transform Ghana into the dazzling and colourful blooms that characterise orchids.”
Chief Executive Officer of Stratcomm Africa and the Ghana Garden and Flower Movement, Esther A. N. Cobbah, described the news as exciting and inspiring.
“This is impressive. It is remarkable to see how Singapore values gardens and flowers and uses them to express international friendship and solidarity,” she said.
Cobbah added that the development comes at a timely moment as Ghana prepares to host the 2025 Ghana Garden and Flower Show at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park in Accra from September 20 to 28 under the theme “Urban Places, Green Spaces.”
“We invite the public to join us at the show. There will be many varieties of orchids and other flowers and plants on display. Come and enjoy the beauty in nature,” she urged.
Now in its 13th year, the Ghana Garden and Flower Show has become Ghana’s premier platform for promoting sustainable floriculture, green living, and innovative eco-enterprises.
The 2025 edition will bring together policymakers, climate finance institutions, development partners, private investors, corporate leaders, academia, innovators, entrepreneurs, and the general public, united in advancing greener and more resilient urban spaces.
Activities lined up include daily exhibitions of floriculture, horticulture, and eco-friendly innovations; the Green to Riches Conference on green entrepreneurship and youth opportunities; masterclasses and demonstrations; children’s activities under the Little Green Fingers programme; as well as evening events such as Music Night, Drama Night, and the Fashion in Bloom Show.
Organisers say it will be nine days of showcasing the best in floriculture, horticulture, green technology, natural wellness, and garden design.
