Kennedy Ohene Agyapong is emerging as the preferred candidate among younger delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), according to a new poll by Sanity Africa, positioning him strongly ahead of the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for January 31.
The survey, conducted between December 2025 and January 2026, shows that delegates under 40 overwhelmingly favour Mr Agyapong. Sixty-three per cent of respondents in this age group expressed support for him, compared with 33.5 per cent for former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Dr Bryan Acheampong placed third among youth delegates, while Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Ing. Kwabena Agyapong trailed significantly.
Youth momentum could prove decisive.
The poll suggests that Mr Agyapong’s strong showing among younger delegates could be a decisive factor in the primaries, particularly as this demographic overlaps with students and unemployed voters, two groups that also show strong support for him.
Among students, 58.9 per cent indicated a preference for Mr Agyapong, while 52.8 per cent of unemployed delegates said they would vote for him.
Broader delegate preferences
Overall, the survey places Mr Agyapong in the lead with 52 per cent support among delegates, followed by Dr Bawumia on 40 per cent. Dr Acheampong ranks third with 7 per cent, while Dr Adutwum and Ing. Kwabena Agyapong register 0.7 per cent and 0.3 per cent respectively.
The poll also highlights notable gender differences. Mr Agyapong commands 57.8 per cent support among female delegates, compared with 37.1 per cent for Dr Bawumia. Among male delegates, however, Dr Bawumia leads with 48.9 per cent, ahead of Mr Agyapong’s 42.4 per cent.
Religion continues to influence delegate preferences. Muslim delegates show stronger support for Dr Bawumia (52.8 per cent), while Christian delegates largely favour Mr Agyapong, with 61.6 per cent indicating support for him.
Age and employment trends further underline contrasting support bases. Dr Bawumia is preferred among middle-aged (40–55) and older (55+) delegates, while Mr Agyapong dominates among younger voters. In terms of employment, self-employed delegates, students, and the unemployed largely favour Mr Agyapong, while those in full-time employment lean towards Dr Bawumia.
