The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has outlined strategic reforms that it believes will steer the country toward stable power supply.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister at the 9th Ghana Energy Awards, Richard Gyan Mensah, the Deputy Minister, revealed that strategic interventions across the generation mix, distribution of power, and financing in the energy sector are underway to ensure the country enjoys constant power for socio-economic development.
“The government remains committed to consolidating gains made in recent months while pursuing long-term goals of energy security, economic stability, and sustainable industrial expansion. Effective management of the energy sector extends beyond infrastructure development to encompass the people and investors driving its growth,” Mr. Mensah noted.
He further outlined deliberate policy actions, such as the renegotiation of the energy sector debt. Notably, the successful renegotiation of monies owed to Independent Power Producers (IPPs), which, according to the Ministry of Energy, saved the country about $300 million.
“Through strategic reforms, we have begun to reverse long-standing challenges and restore confidence across the energy value chain. The results are evident in power generation and distribution efficiency, petroleum sector investment, and the expansion of renewable energy initiatives,” he stated.
The addition of over 200 megawatts of solar projects, new mini-grid systems providing electricity to scores of people in Ada, and the nationwide rollout of smart streetlights are some of the notable government initiatives geared toward energy security.
Held under the theme, ‘Repositioning the Energy Sector as a Pillar of National Development,’ the event gathered policymakers, captains of industry, and other stakeholders.
Meanwhile, Ing. Edward Obeng-Kenzo, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority (VRA) and Judith Adwoba Blay, Acting CEO of Ghana Gas Company were adjudged the male and female energy personalities of the year, respectively.
