Two rooms of the girls’ dormitory at Tolon Senior High School in the Northern Region have been damaged by fire, while one other room sustained partial damage, the Ghana Fire Service has confirmed.
“The cause of the fire is not yet known. We are yet to engage with school authorities,” Baba Hudu, the Fire Service’s Public Relations Officer, told Joynews.
According to a student who spoke anonymously, the blaze started while they were preparing for classes. “We saw smoke coming from the roof of the dormitory, and soon after, the fire started,” the student said.
The fire service responded promptly and managed to contain the flames, saving the rest of the building from destruction. School authorities have not yet stated the incident.
This marks the second fire at the Tolon SHS girls’ dormitory, following a similar blaze in 2022.
The recent incident comes amid a worrying trend, as just last week, the girls’ dormitory at the Northern School of Business (Nobisco) was also gutted by fire, displacing about 900 students.
The affected Nobisco students are awaiting arrangements to resume classes.
The Fire Service has launched an investigation into the cause of the Tolon SHS blaze, but no definitive cause has yet been established.
