The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has wished the New Patriotic Party (NPP) a peaceful and successful presidential primary as the major opposition party prepares to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
In a statement issued on Friday, January 30, the CPP extended greetings to the leadership, members and supporters of the NPP ahead of the primaries scheduled for Saturday.
The CPP said internal party elections were an important feature of Ghana’s democratic tradition and played a key role in strengthening the country’s multi-party system.
According to the party, competitive but peaceful primaries were essential for consolidating democratic values, deepening political tolerance and sustaining public confidence in political institutions.
The CPP urged NPP aspirants, delegates, party executives and supporters to conduct themselves with maturity and restraint before, during and after the primaries.
“Whereas political competition is natural and healthy, it must never degenerate into acts of violence, intimidation or divisiveness that threaten national cohesion,” the statement said.
The party noted that Ghana’s democracy had earned international respect largely due to the conduct of political actors who have shown commitment to peace and respect for the rule of law.
It called on the NPP to accept the outcome of the primaries in good faith, regardless of the winner, and to resolve any concerns through established internal party mechanisms.
The CPP also used the occasion to appeal to all political parties to prioritise peace, dialogue and democratic ethics in their activities, stressing that peaceful elections were fundamental to national development and the well-being of citizens.
