A learner driver lost control of the vehicle he was driving and tragically ran over a mother of four at Assin Fosu in the Central Region on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at around 11:00 a.m.
The deceased, Gladys Mensah, 40, died when the driver lost control of the Hyundai truck, which was being used to teach him how to drive and run over Gladys.
According to police sources, the suspect driver, Benjamin Kwarfo, 26, was teaching his conductor (mate), Eric Ackon, 34, how to drive a Hyundai truck with registration number GR 6146-12, when the vehicle went out of control due to inexperience.
The truck struck Gladys Mensah, who was hawking second-hand clothes by the roadside near the SDA School at Habitat, a suburb of Assin Fosu.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the truck dragged the victim for several meters before crashing into a nearby house, causing extensive damage to the building.
They described the scene as horrifying, noting that the woman sustained severe head injuries and bled profusely.
She was rushed to St. Francis Xavier Hospital, but was sadly pronounced dead later that day.
The Central North Regional Commander of Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), Assistant Superintendent of Police, Wonder Lumor, who briefed the media on the incident, said the learner driver and the supervising driver have since been detained by the police at Assin Fosu to assist with the investigation, and the vehicle has been impounded.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the St. Francis Xavier Hospital morgue.
Residents expressed deep sorrow over the incident and urged authorities to cordon off the partially collapsed structure impacted by the accident, saying it posed a danger to pedestrians.
