Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has congratulated President John Dramani Mahama and the nation of Ghana for securing the unanimous endorsement of all African Union (AU) member states to support a groundbreaking resolution at the United Nations.
In a post on X, Mr Ablakwa praised the collective achievement, which sees President Mahama’s initiative to table a resolution declaring the transatlantic slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity receive full continental backing.
The resolution also seeks reparations, including the return of looted cultural artefacts taken during the colonial period.
“Congratulations to President Mahama and Ghana for securing the unanimous endorsement of all African Union member states backing President Mahama’s initiative to table a resolution at the UN declaring the transatlantic slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity and to demand reparations including the return of looted objects,” he wrote.
Mr Ablakwa highlighted that President Mahama is expected to obtain a similar adoption at the 50th CARICOM Summit on February 24, 2026, further strengthening ties between Africa and the Caribbean and consolidating global support for the initiative.
Following this, the resolution is scheduled to be formally tabled at the United Nations General Assembly on March 26, 2026, marking a historic moment in international efforts to address historical injustices.
The Minister commended the tireless work of colleagues at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as a coalition of global experts and activists, for their role in securing this milestone.
“I commend dedicated colleagues at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and our coalition of global experts and activists for this historic milestone,” Minister Ablakwa noted, emphasising the significance of unity in achieving justice and recognition.
The Minister framed the achievement as not only a diplomatic success but also a symbol of continental unity and moral leadership.
He underlined that the initiative reflects a broader commitment to “reset the development paradigm of our continent with a new leadership approach that creates real opportunities and wealth for our people.”
