Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong has sharply criticized the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), accusing it of wasting public funds and overstepping its authority in the investigation of ex-Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
In his critique, Agyepong made these key points:
- “Media Trial” Accusation: The OSP is conducting a “public and media trial” against Ofori-Atta without formal charges. “No charges have been brought… he’s not an accused person,” Agyepong stated.
- Prosecution Delay Questioned: “If the OSP has evidence, why hasn’t it charged Ofori-Atta? People have been tried in absentia before.”
- “Fugitive” Label Disputed: Only courts—not prosecutors—can declare someone a fugitive from justice.
- Budget Concerns: Called the OSP a “worthless drain on our overstretched public purse,” citing the agency’s overseas operations during its head’s alleged security threats as hypocritical.
- Defended Due Process: While supporting accountability for misconduct, Agyepong warned against “Rambo-style invasions” and emphasized that Ofori-Atta has the right to remain silent.
Agyepong concluded that the OSP’s approach risks damaging the NPP’s reputation through “political expediency.” His remarks have reignited debates about the OSP’s effectiveness and cost to taxpayers.
