Casual workers at the Northern Regional Hospital, widely known as Tamale Central Hospital, have once again downed their tools in protest over unpaid salary arrears spanning five months.
This marks the third industrial action by the group, despite earlier assurances from authorities that their outstanding payments would be settled.
The workers had temporarily suspended a previous strike on March 25 after intervention from the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, who pledged that payments would be made by March 30.
However, the failure to honour that commitment has reignited tensions, prompting the workers to resume their sit-down strike.
The situation has already begun to affect operations at the facility, with sanitation conditions deteriorating in several wards and washrooms due to the absence of orderlies.
The workers insist they will not return to duty until all arrears are fully cleared, warning that partial payments will not be accepted as a solution.
Speaking to Channel One TV on Wednesday, April 1, a representative of the group, Laila Imoro, expressed frustration over what she described as selective payments.
“Last week we went on strike, and we were promised payment by Monday. But they failed to pay us. Only a few people received one month’s salary, while the majority of us are still waiting,” she said.
