The Burma Camp Tennis Club (BCTC) successfully hosted the 12th edition of the Bi-Annual Independence Day International Tennis Tournament, bringing together players from Ghana and Nigeria in a celebration of sport, friendship and shared history.
The competition featured the Ghana-based club against their counterparts from Nigeria’s Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida Country Club (IBB Country Club – Tennis Section) as both sides commemorated their respective independence anniversaries.
Held from March 6 to March 8, 2026, at the Burma Camp tennis courts in Accra, the three-day tournament attracted members of both clubs, guests and tennis enthusiasts who gathered to witness competitive yet friendly matches.
Organisers say the bi-annual event continues to serve as a platform for strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between Ghana and Nigeria, while promoting patriotism, unity and social cohesion through sport.
President of the Burma Camp Tennis Club, Felix Adom Asante, who is also an Air Vice Marshal, highlighted the importance of the tournament in fostering unity through sport.
“This tournament is played every year and term international friendly tennis tournament. We play here in Ghana, and they {IBB} travel from Abuja to join us to play during our independence day, and we also travel to Abuja in October when they also have their independence day,” he told JoySports.
“The tournament has been going on for 12 years now, and both clubs have become friends… this camaraderie has been fruitful, apart from the social aspect, we also have business interactions with them as a team from Nigeria, and we are very happy for the sponsors 360 surveys & Engineering Ltd, SIC insurance, Bajfreight and logistics, etc” he added.
Beyond the tennis courts, the tournament also created opportunities for networking and business collaborations among participants from both countries, reinforcing the role of sport in building broader relationships across Africa.
Members of the Burma Camp Tennis Club who participated included Air Vice Marshal Felix Adom Asante, Air Vice Marshal JM Larkai, Brigadier General S. Amengor, Brigadier General KK Affrifah, Commodore Kyaano, Colonel MY Borbi, Colonel A. Awuni, Colonel E. Osie-Gyebi, Colonel MK Hagan and Captain (GN) Abu Mahama, among several others.
The visiting Nigerian side from the IBB Country Club featured players such as Ossi Agugua, Nwabueze N., Onyema P. Wangara, Jeff Owraigbo, Major General Ambassador George G. Umo, Uju Atusiubah, Toney Areh, Air Vice Marshal Saliu Atawodi, Orjiakor H., and Colonel Williams Alao.
Now in its 12th edition, the Ghana–Nigeria Independence Day Tennis Tournament continues to grow in stature, highlighting the shared heritage of the two West African nations while using sport as a bridge for friendship and cooperation.
