The National Teaching Council (NTC) has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging an increase in teacher licensure examination fees and claims that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has backtracked on its promise to abolish the examination.
Addressing the media at a press briefing on 23 February 2026, the Board Chairman of the NTC, Emmanuel Kwame Alorvi, described the allegations as “totally false” and urged the public to treat them with “the contempt they deserve”.
“The last time the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination fee was increased was in 2023. For four years now — 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 — the fee has remained 450 cedis for fresh candidates. No change,” he stated.
He added that resit candidates continue to pay 150 cedis per paper, stressing that there has been no increment in fees.
On claims that the NDC has abandoned its manifesto promise, Mr Alorvi clarified that the commitment was to abolish the old system and integrate licensure into final-year examinations.
“The NDC shall abolish the teacher licensure examination and integrate the licensure process into the final-year examination of teacher training,” he said.
He explained that the reform removes the one-year waiting period under the previous regime while maintaining professional standards.
