The Member of Parliament for Mpreaso Constituency in the Eastern Region, Davis Opoku Ansah, has announced that he is a co-sponsor of the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana (Amendment) Bill, 2025, currently before Parliament.
The proposed legislation seeks to amend constitutional provisions that bar some Ghanaians from holding certain public offices due to dual citizenship or perceived allegiance to another country.
According to Mr Opoku Ansah, the bill is intended to address long-standing concerns about the exclusion of qualified citizens who are willing and able to serve the nation.
He argued that Ghana stands to benefit significantly from the expertise and global exposure of its diaspora community.
He highlighted the contributions of Ghanaians living abroad, noting that many continue to support national development through remittances, business investments, job creation and the transfer of knowledge and skills.
He stressed that the amendment would ensure fairness and inclusivity in public service eligibility.
“Supporting this bill does not diminish loyalty to Ghana,” he said. “It simply opens doors for the nation to benefit from the experience, skills, and expertise of all its citizens, wherever they reside.”
The bill is expected to generate robust debate in Parliament as lawmakers weigh its implications for public office eligibility and broader diaspora engagement in Ghana’s governance and development agenda.
