The Ghana Education Service (GES) has concluded investigations into a feeding incident at Savelugu Senior High School, following a video that went viral in January showing students being served supper without the expected protein accompaniment.
In a statement signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations, GES outlined the findings of its inquiry and announced immediate corrective measures.
“On the said date, students were scheduled to be served jollof rice with eggs for supper. However, the supplier failed to supply the eggs,” GES stated.
According to the Service, school authorities went ahead and served the meal without the eggs, assuring students that the shortfall would be addressed later.
“The school proceeded to serve the meal without eggs and assured the students that double protein would be served to them in the subsequent meal,” the statement noted.
However, GES described the school’s decision as unacceptable, stressing that alternative measures could have been explored.
“Management finds the school’s decision unacceptable, since an alternative measure could have been explored,” it said.
The service further disclosed that the school’s headmaster was not present at the time of the incident, explaining that he had obtained approval to be away.
The GES also revealed that the incident occurred on a day when the school’s dining hall had been booked for a New Patriotic Party (NPP) event in the constituency.
The GES stated that during the event, a party member exploited a gap in supervision to record and share the video.
“During this activity, a party member exploited the administrative lapse to record and mischievously circulate the video,” the GES said.
The service maintained that the incident was an isolated one and does not reflect the school’s usual feeding arrangements.
“The incident was an isolated occurrence resulting from inadequate supervision by the school leadership at the time,” it said, adding that “contrary to the narrative suggested in the circulated video, the incident does not accurately represent the school’s typical feeding arrangements.”
As part of corrective measures, the GES said disciplinary action has been taken.
“Management has taken the necessary disciplinary action,” the statement said. “The Municipal Director of Education has been temporarily assigned to oversee the school’s feeding arrangements,” the GES noted.
The service assured parents, students, and the general public that student welfare remains a priority.
