The Ghana Prisons Council, led by its Chair, Apostle Alexander Kumi Larbi, held a courtesy meeting with the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, to discuss pressing issues affecting the service and explore avenues for enhanced collaboration.
The discussions, held at the Ministry of the Interior, centred on strengthening partnerships to ensure the Council effectively executes its mandate.
In his address, Apostle Kumi Larbi reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to supporting the Ghana Prisons Service.
He emphasised the importance of regular consultations with the Director-General and her team, as well as the provision of evidence-based updates on the Service’s operations.
The Council Chair also expressed gratitude for government’s provision of vehicles, including pickups, buses, and a command vehicle, delivered last year to the Prisons Service.
While commending the initiative, he appealed for additional vehicles to address persistent operational challenges, particularly those related to transport and infrastructure limitations.
Responding, Minister Muntaka acknowledged the Council’s visit and the issues raised, noting that prisons remain a priority area for government.
He assured the Council that concerns regarding staff accommodation, salary harmonisation, and operational support are under active consideration, and highlighted efforts to strengthen facilities through public-private partnerships and relevant legislative measures, including the Parole and Community Service Bill.
