A senior figure in Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, Hassan Tampuli, has described the outcome of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries as a clear endorsement of the former Vice President’s national popularity.
Dr Bawumia secured a decisive win in the January 31, 2026, contest, polling 110,643 votes, equivalent to 56.48 per cent of the total valid ballots cast, to clinch the party’s flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 general elections.
According to the Gushegu MP, the results demonstrate that Dr Bawumia’s support cuts across regional and constituency lines, reflecting strong confidence in his leadership among party delegates nationwide.
Mr Tampuli said the scale and spread of the victory underscored the former Vice President’s broad-based appeal.
“This election truly demonstrates that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is indeed very popular. Out of 276 constituencies, he won in 232 constituencies, and he won across the country, not just in some areas. Even in the Central Region, where our performance was below average, he still won in about five constituencies.”
“In the Eastern Region, out of 33 constituencies, we won in 25 constituencies, and in Ashanti, with 47 constituencies, we won in 45,” he stated in an interview with Channel TV on Monday, February 2.
He added that the emphatic outcome places Dr Bawumia in a strong position to unite the party and lead its preparations as the NPP works towards reclaiming power in the 2028 general elections.
Former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong finished second with 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 per cent, while Dr Bryan Acheampong placed third with 36,303 votes, or 18.53 per cent.
Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong trailed with 1,999 votes (1.02 per cent) and 402 votes (0.21 per cent) respectively.
