President John Dramani Mahama has praised Ghana’s economic performance over the past year, describing the country as a “poster boy” of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
According to him “We are all surprised and shocked at the quick turnaround. Anytime I meet the IMF officials and the World Bank Officials, they themselves cannot believe what has happened in Ghana, so Ghana has now become the poster boy of the IMF and the World Bank,” Mr Mahama said when speaking on the state of the economy during the 23rd Anniversary and Thanksgiving Service of the First Sky Construction Company on Sunday, January 25
The President said that Ghana’s economic recovery under his administration has attracted international recognition, with global financial institutions citing the country as a model of reform and stability.
President Mahama said the progress made over the last year has also drawn admiration from other African countries, many of which are now studying Ghana’s policy choices and reform strategies.
“So when you go to other African countries, they say dont you see Ghana, don’t you see what Ghana has done. And that is why I say, it is by the grace of God.”
He noted that the renewed confidence from the IMF and the World Bank reflects the effectiveness of his government’s economic management and commitment to fiscal discipline, growth and structural reforms, saying he was not thinking thing will turnaround so quickly.
“In my own imagination, I thought that we would need about two years to begin to see a turnaround, that is what I thought, but Ebenezer, this is how far God has brought us,” he said.
