The Chiana-Paga MP and a member of Parliament’s Education Committee, Nikyema Billa Alamzy, has renewed calls for the reintroduction of corporal punishment in schools as a means of tackling rising indiscipline among students.
In an interview on Channel One TV on Wednesday, August 20, the legislator argued that the decision to abolish corporal punishment had been misplaced.
He insisted that Ghana must develop clear policies to address misconduct in educational institutions.
“I believe we need to set out clear policies to deal with indiscipline in schools. We must return to corporal punishment.”
“We adopted the idea of abolishing it wrongly, largely citing examples from America and elsewhere. Yet America itself has reintroduced it. We should never have abandoned it in the first place,” Mr Alamzy asserted.
He emphasised that not every foreign practice is appropriate for Ghana, adding that home-grown approaches should be prioritised.
According to him, properly regulated corporal punishment could serve as a deterrent to bullying, harassment and other forms of misconduct that have become increasingly prevalent in schools.
