Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has commended the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for what he described as a marked improvement in power supply across the region, noting that electricity has remained largely stable since June 2025.
Speaking during a courtesy call by ECG management at the Regional Coordinating Council in Kumasi on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, Dr Amoakohene said the reduction in outages was evident and had positively impacted residents and businesses.
“From June 2025 till date, power has been stable in the region, and I must commend ECG for the hard work,” he said. “Initially, I was receiving a lot of complaints on outages from residents, but now these complaints have reduced drastically. Everyone can see that you are working hard to keep the lights on.”
The Minister linked the improved power situation to the government’s broader agenda of ensuring an uninterrupted electricity supply nationwide, describing stable power as crucial for economic growth and improved living standards.
“Keeping the lights on goes a long way to support His Excellency the President’s vision of uninterrupted power supply across the country,” he added.
Dr Amoakohene also cited recent technical challenges in areas such as Anwomaso and Obuasi, noting that ECG worked closely with the Grid Company of Ghana (GRIDCo) to resolve faults and restore supply promptly. He further praised the company for using digital platforms to engage customers and address concerns more efficiently.
In response, the General Manager for ECG Ashanti East, Ing. Daniel Mensah Asare, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to maintaining stable power for residents and essential services.
Meanwhile, the General Manager for Ashanti Sub-transmission, Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher, briefed the Minister on ongoing system improvement projects aimed at strengthening power delivery across the region. He mentioned key initiatives, including the construction of a sub-transmission line from Adoato to Barekese, which is expected to improve supply to areas such as Offinso and support Ghana Water Limited’s pumping systems for Greater Kumasi.
“We expect to complete this project by the end of the year,” he said, adding that other projects include new substations at Agogo, Nsuta and Kumawu, as well as upgrades at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point.
The General Manager for Ashanti West, Ing. George Amoah, also pledged ECG’s support for the government’s streetlight installation project, while his Ashanti South counterpart, Ing. Jonathan Adjabeng, clarified that maintenance of streetlights remains the responsibility of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies.
“ECG provides technical expertise during the installation process to ensure the streetlights are installed on the right transformer, phase and according to required standards,” he explained. “All MMDAs should nominate a certified electrician to serve as a liaison between ECG and the assemblies for proper coordination.”
The engagement formed part of efforts by ECG to update regional authorities on its operations and strengthen collaboration with the government to sustain recent gains in power stability.
