The Head of Local Government Service (LGS), Professor Lord Mensah, has said that a coordinated effort among staff members could help achieve his vision to meet the Service’s target.
The primary responsibility of the LGS is to provide a range of vital services to people in defined areas and to maintain their welfare.
He said his vision was anchored on four pillars: data-driven decision-making, professionalising the Local Government Service, promoting Public-Private Partnerships, and strengthening fiscal decentralisation.
He made this statement during his visit to the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council (ERCC) in Koforidua.
Among his entourage was the Chief Director of the Office of the Head of Local Government Service, Felicia Dapaah Agyeman-Boakye.
Prof. Mensah said it was incumbent upon him to move from the Head Office to interact with the Regional Coordinating Councils (RCCs), Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), to identify their challenges, and find solutions to them.
He asked participants to eliminate perceptions of bias, favouritism and nepotism within the Local Government Service and, instead, build a disciplined, ethical workforce practice to improve responsiveness to community needs.
He highlighted the promotion of Public Private Partnership (PPP) and charged RCCs and MMDAs to identify credible private sector partners to support developmental initiatives, infrastructure, service delivery, and innovation.
Prof. Mensah said, ” Government resources alone are no longer sufficient to meet the growing needs of our communities, but then it’s not just engaging the private sector; it should be a partnership. PPP at the local level. ”
Mr Ebenezer Amoah, Chief Director of the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council, pledged the MDAs’ and the Council’s support to improve upon the efforts made in the previous years to harness efficiency.
