A Nigerian security analyst, Denis Amachree, has stressed that terrorist attacks in Nigeria are not directed at one religious group, warning that all citizens—regardless of faith—are targets.
Speaking on The Pulse on JoyNews on Thursday, in the wake of recent US strikes against Islamic State targets at Nigeria’s request, Mr Amachree said the narrative that terrorism in Nigeria is solely anti-Christian is misleading.
“As a security analyst in Nigeria, I will tell you, Christians and Muslims and even people who don’t have any religion are being attacked and killed by terrorists,” he said.
He explained that terrorist violence in the country has been indiscriminate, citing attacks on places of worship belonging to different faiths.
“So the target is terrorists. Even on Christmas Day in Bolo State, there was a bomb that was exploded in a mosque and killed a lot of people, so it is not a matter of which religion,” he added.
Mr Amachree reiterated the need for strong international cooperation, including recent US military support, to help Nigeria confront the persistent threat of extremism.
“I think Nigeria should be happy that we are going after terrorism,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and called on authorities to strengthen security measures nationwide, noting that terrorism poses a collective threat that requires a united national and international response.
