The University of Ghana (UG) has commissioned its Innovation Enclave, a facility designed to bridge academic research with youth entrepreneurship.
The commissioning, held at the former RID Annex, marked a milestone in the university’s vision to become a hub for creativity and technological advancement.
The project was realised through a partnership between UG, the Kosmos Innovation Center (KIC), and Imperial College London.
Mr Benjamin Gyan‑Kesse, Executive Director of KIC, challenged the university community to rethink traditional academic structures to accommodate student entrepreneurs.
He said many students were forced to choose between education and their growing businesses.
Mr Gyan‑Kesse noted that data from KIC‑supported startups showed student‑led ventures created an average of eight to ten jobs each, contributing to tackling unemployment.
“Can the university start thinking around how we create special vehicle processes for young entrepreneurs?
“Let us find a way to support brilliant entrepreneurs and push them so they can really do this for Ghana. These are the guys who are going to make our universities great,” he said.
Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice‑Chancellor of UG, emphasised the importance of sustained partnership, noting that the eight‑year collaboration with KIC, dating back to 2016, was built on trust and shared vision.
She expressed pride in the achievements of UG students in diverse fields and assured stakeholders that the university was ready to evolve to support its “champions.”
“We have heard your plea and the challenge you have thrown at us to be creative and accommodate such students, so they don’t drop out,” she stated.
Prof. Amfo said the Pro‑Vice‑Chancellors for Academic and Student Affairs would explore modular programmes to help students balance academic knowledge with entrepreneurial experience.
She also acknowledged the contributions of the KGL Foundation, Nubuke Foundation, and Impact Hub Accra.
The facility was dedicated as a centre of excellence for innovation serving humanity and driving national development.
It is supported by international and local partners, including Imperial College London, whose expertise in innovation ecosystems has been instrumental.
The event was attended by senior university officials, including Pro‑Vice‑Chancellor Prof Felix Ankomah Asante, representatives from the French Embassy, and industry partners.
