The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) has shut down 96 health facilities across the country for operating without valid licences, the agency’s Registrar, Dr Winfred Korletey Baah, has revealed.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, December 3, Dr Baah said most of the facilities were operating illegally, with 80 per cent lacking any licence and 20 per cent running on expired licences.
“Currently, we’ve shut down 96 health facilities. So most of them are operating without a license, and so about 80% without a license, 20% of them with an expired license.
“So when your license expires, then you are also on the wrong side of the law. So these are the reasons,” he explained.
The shutdowns span multiple regions, including Greater Accra, Ashanti, Eastern, Bono, and Ahafo. Dr Baah disclosed that the Ashanti Region recorded the highest number of closures.
HeFRA’s move is part of ongoing regulatory enforcement to ensure that all health facilities comply with national licensing requirements, a measure aimed at protecting patients and maintaining standards in healthcare delivery.
Dr Baah’s disclosure underscores concerns about widespread non-compliance in the health sector, with the agency now intensifying monitoring and compliance checks to curb illegal operations.
