Former United States player Alexi Lalas wants Ghana to be drawn in the same group as the World Cup hosts, ahead of Friday’s draw.
Lalas, who scored nine goals in ninety-eight appearances for ‘The Yankees’ between 1991 and 1998, made the comments on Fox Sports’ special World Cup preview show.
‘‘This isn’t a great Ghana team…Give me Ghana.’’
‘‘This isn’t a great Ghana team, but it is still Ghana. They have plenty of history when it comes to playing against us.’’
Ghana has won two of the three meetings with the United States in the World Cup.
The Black Stars beat the Yankees 2-1 in the very first meeting between the two sides, a group-stage affair in 2006.
Four years later, the four-time African champions repeated the trick when Asamoah Gyan’s stoppage-time half-volley settled the round of 16 contest in extra time.
Ghana’s only defeat to the U.S was recorded in 2014, a 2-1 group stage loss in Brazil.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 official draw will be held on Friday, 5 PM local time in Washington.
With Ghana in pot four and tournament hosts the United States in pot one, the two sides could meet again at next year’s World Cup.
