Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey has strongly refuted claims that she sanctioned the arrest of the Kwahu Queen Mother, Nana Adwoa Gyemfua III, describing the reports as “false” and a “misrepresentation of the facts.”
Agoo 96.9 FM had reported that the Minister allegedly confirmed authorising the arrest, supported by comments from a chief identified as Nana Nim Sarpong (Abene Bamuhene).
But in a press statement, the Minister rejected the claims outright.
“The story as reported by the said chief, and captured by Agoo 96.9 FM, is a misrepresentation of the facts… and an accusation based on falsehood,” she stated.
According to the Minister, a delegation of Kwahu chiefs had visited her on December 1, to brief her on the police action and the Inspector-General of Police’s apology over the incident.
She explained that she apologised to the chiefs not because she authorised the arrest, but because of her leadership role in the region.
“Never in my submissions did I categorically say that I ordered the arrest of the Obahemaa,” she said.
“I take responsibility… not because I sanctioned the wrongdoing, but because I am in charge of those who were supposed to have acted better.”
The Minister urged the public to disregard the report, insisting that she remains committed to ensuring peace in the Eastern Region.
