ACCRA – Tensions flared in Parliament today as Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga demanded answers from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin regarding former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s continued absence from Ghana.
Afenyo-Markin had assured the House in April that Ofori-Atta – wanted for questioning by the Special Prosecutor over corruption allegations – would return from medical travel by May 2025. With June now underway and no sign of the former minister, Ayariga confronted his counterpart during Tuesday’s session:
“The Minority Leader stood at this very podium and pledged Ken Ofori-Atta’s return last month. Today that pledge remains unfulfilled. Where is he? If we cannot trust commitments made in this chamber, what becomes of our moral authority?”
The Majority Leader further criticized the Minority’s inconsistency, noting their absence at EOCO headquarters during last week’s detention of NPP Chairman Wontumi: “Where was this solidarity when your own regional chairman needed support? This selective stance undermines Parliament’s credibility.”
The Office of the Special Prosecutor confirms Ofori-Atta has ignored three formal summonses. No medical documentation justifying his extended absence has been submitted to investigators.
