Two tricycle operators were shot dead in an ambush at Zanamat, a suburb of Bawku in the Upper East Region, on Wednesday, January 7.
The victims, residents of Bankango in the Binduri District, were reportedly on their way to attend to a customer when they were attacked.
Sources indicate that a group of young men intercepted the operators on the road and allegedly summoned gunmen, who opened fire.
One of the victims died instantly at the scene, while the other sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to the hospital.
Both victims were taken to the Vineyard Hospital in Bawku, where the injured person later succumbed to his injuries.
The deceased have been identified as Salifu Shaibu and Asaana Mbawin. The incident is believed to be the first major casualty in the area since the start of the year.
Confirming the attack, the Assembly Member for the Binduri Electoral Area, Azumah Emmanuel, said he had been informed by the police.
“I received a call from the police indicating that two of my electorates have been shot dead. They are one Bissa boy and one Moshi boy,” he said.
In response to the shooting, military personnel deployed to maintain law and order following the mediation efforts by the Asantehene were seen patrolling the town.
Authorities have launched investigations to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
